Genny, a free VST, is actually based of the YM2612 and it's great from what I seen.īUT Aly James FMDrive VST is the best, but it isn't free. Really, VOPM is probably the best free YM2151 Emulator, but it is probably the worst you could use for Genesis Remixes if you don't know the limits by memory.

VOPM also requires you to change many MIDI CC values JUST to get effects working, and sometimes they don't even work! Pitch-Bending is glitched, and is really only achievable by making some adjustments (not really sure how Ableton Live fixes it, but I know how to fix it in FL Studio).
The volume comes out soft, so you have to manually raise it up every time, and it varies by instrument. VOPM also has glitches, but it's better for you to discover it yourself. VOPM is also not user friendly at all, making your own FM instruments takes forerver, so using converted genesis instruments is your best bet, but they are NOT THE SAME so some instruments will be glitched, like the distortion guitar from Thunder Force IV's Metal Squad. Oh, and samples can not be over eachother, which is what most "sega genesis remixes" ignore. Please don't use the soundfont's percussion, it is overused and not even the best. Since VOPM is a YM2151 emulator, it has no sampling capabilities as the YM2151 did not offer it, but it offered 2 more channels than the Sega Genesis' YM2612, so sampled percussion in your remixes WILL NOT come from VOPM, you will have to used actual ripped samples from games, which sucks because in trackers you could MAKE YOUR OWN samples. I could go on and on about this chip, but it is better to research it all. The 6th channel could be used as a sampling channel to put samples in, and it was notably used for bass drum and snare drum. The YM2612 could only pan to the left, middle, and right. Genesis is a combination of the YM2612 (FM) and SN76489 (PSG, also in the Master System and Game Gear). The Genesis can use up 10 channels in total, IF you are not using the PSG's noise capibility, which would limit a composition to 9 channels. Most "sega genesis remixes" really doesn't take note of that, especially with that outdated soundfont. If you are using VOPM, you really need to know the limitations of the Genesis itself.
